Joseph Pilates was born in Dusseldorf, Germany in 1880. An exercise enthusiast since childhood, he began developing the fitness method he is now famous for while working at a hospital during World War I. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1926 and opened a studio in New York where his unique approach and equipment gained immediate popularity among dancers. Today, the Pilates method is world renowned and more popular than ever.

Pilates differs from gym workouts by involving the whole body in each exercise and emphasizing abdominal control. Each exercise recruits the body's deepest muscles to simultaneously strengthen, stretch and align the body.
